Adrian College, Siena Heights football host day-night doubleheader

It’s a day-night college football doubleheader in Adrian Saturday as the Siena Heights kicks off the day against Olivet Nazarene before Adrian College takes on Madonna in a nightcap.

The Siena Heights University football team is staring at an 0-2 record, but head coach Matt Kohn isn’t worried about his team getting too down on themselves.

“This is a close group,” Kohn said. “They’ll stick together. They’ll battle back. Really, that’s all you can do.”

Siena Heights will host ONU in Week 3 of the season and try to right the ship. The Saints haven’t started 0-2 since 2021 when they rebounded and finished 6-4.

“You’ve got to stick together and get ready for the next game,” Kohn said

SHU lost 34-28 to Taylor University in the first week of the season, then lost 31-9 to No. 7 Marian, Ind. on Saturday. Seven turnovers were the biggest reason the Saints lost to the Knights. Kohn said that can’t happen again.

“You aren’t going to beat very many teams with that many turnovers,” he said. “It’s just about taking care of the football.”

Siena Heights has been decimated by injuries in the early going, losing three starting offensive linemen. Against Marian, three freshmen were in the starting lineup.

“We haven’t started three freshmen on the offensive line since we started the program,” Kohn said. “That’s just where we are at.”

Elijah Taylor tossed two interceptions, and his backup Braylen Himmelein had two of his three passes picked off. The Saints also lost all three of their fumbles.

Taylor threw for a touchdown and 195 yards. Despite turning the ball over so much, SHU had just one fewer first down than Marian and only 28 fewer yards.
