Jordan Love injury update: Packers QB not medically cleared to play, per report; Malik Willis in line to start

The Green Bay Packers quarterback room was turned on its head out of the gate due to the knee injury Jordan Love suffered in the opener. While the club held out some hope by listing the signal-caller as questionable for Sunday’s Week 2 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, The Athletic reports that Love has not been medically cleared to play.

“That’s not happening,” a source told The Athletic as it relates to Love playing in Week 2.

Head coach Matt LaFleur noted that Love will not be placed on injured reserve, as he recovers from the reported sprained MCL that is expected to sideline him 3-6 weeks. This latest report adds that it’s also a long shot for Love to suit up in Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans. A more optimistic timetable for Love is a possible return in Week 4 when the club faces the Vikings. Whenever he does return, Love is expected to wear a knee brace.

This now leads to Malik Willis getting the start in Week 2 as the club opens up Lambeau Field for the 2024 season. Behind him, Sean Clifford is slated to be the backup. Willis’ regular-season debut for the Green Bay Packers came earlier than just about anyone expected. The quarterback entered in the closing seconds of Friday night’s Week 1 showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles after Love went down.

Willis was unable to lead the Packers to victory on Friday night, as Green Bay was on the wrong side of a 34-29 final score, but he may get another chance next week.

As he nears his first start with Green Bay, here are five fast facts about Willis.
