Where is Georgia in CFP Top 12 after narrow escape?

It was status quo for our way-too-early College Football Playoff Top 12.

Three teams were idle and the other nine in playoff position were winners — although top-ranked Georgia got a scare from Kentucky in an SEC opener. Missouri also won a one-score game.

The top four for now: Georgia, Ohio State, Utah and Miami. The top four conference champions get first-round byes.

1. Georgia (3-0): The Bulldogs squeaked by Kentucky 13-12, the only touchdown of that entire game being a 3-yard run by Branson Robinson with 12:20 left giving the Bulldogs a 13-9 lead. They hung on from there but it was a close call indeed. Last week: 1. Next: At Alabama on Sept. 28.

2. Ohio State (2-0): The Buckeyes were idle. If they had played and were impressive, we might have boosted them to No. 1 with Georgia’s close call. Last week: 2. Next: vs. Marshall on Saturday.

3. Utah (3-0): No Cam Rising and the Utes didn’t exactly cruise but did get past Utah State 38-21. Rising’s replacement Isaac Williams went 20-for 33 for 239 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Micah Bernard rushed for 123 yards. Last week. 3. Next: At Oklahoma State on Saturday to open Big 12 play.

4. Miami (3-0): Its biggest state rivals are struggling mightily but the Hurricanes keep coasting, this time crushing Ball State 62-0. Cam Ward threw for 346 yards and five touchdowns and that wasn’t even in four quarters as Mario Cristobal called off the dogs early. Last week: 4. Next: At South Florida on Saturday.

5. Texas (3-0): No letdown from last week’s big win over Michigan. The Longhorns throttled UT-San Antonio 56-7. Arch Manning threw for 223 yards and four touchdowns and Quinn Ewers totaled…
