Giants’ Graham Gano likely out ‘a few weeks,’ team will hold kicker workouts

Giants kicker Graham Gano injured his hamstring on the opening kickoff of Sunday’s matchup with the Washington Commanders — an injury that proved very costly in the 21-18 defeat.

And the Giants will be without Gano for even more time.

“I would assume it’s going to be a few weeks here,” head coach Brian Daboll said on Monday.

According to Daboll, the Giants will bring free agent kickers in for a workout, while practice squad kicker Jude McAtamney is also an option to win the starting job.

McAtamney, an undrafted free agent signing out of Rutgers, was not elevated to the active roster on Sunday despite Gano coming into the game less than 100 percent because of a groin injury.

Gano injured his hamstring on the opening kickoff while trying to tackle Washington returner Austin Ekeler on a would-be 98-yard touchdown. The touchdown was negated by a holding penalty on Washington, making Gano’s efforts all for naught.

“We thought Graham would be okay,” Daboll said on Sunday. “He got hurt chasing down [the returner]. It was a hamstring. He didn’t hurt his groin. He hurt his hamstring.”

“We thought he was good,” he later added. “We thought he was good. All the decisions that are made are mine.”
