Shane Beamer gives LaNorris Sellers injury update, shares SEC officials’ response on key calls

COLUMBIA — South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday that starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers assured him he’s good to go vs Akron on Saturday.

Sellers injured his ankle right at the end of the second quarter against LSU. Sellers said his ankle just “flattened” when a defender rolled up on it while he was getting sacked. He said during halftime the trainers taped it, then re-taped it and noticed it wasn’t severe.

In the second half, Sellers played one drive to start the third quarter being replaced by backup quarterback Robby Ashford for the rest of the game.

Beamer said Ashford is still the No. 2 option, with Davis Beville and Luke Doty in the mix for No. 3. The three backup options have all taken SEC snaps at quarterback. Akron coach Joe Moorhead was Ashford’s offensive coordinator when Ashford played at Oregon.

The Gamecocks (2-1, 1-1 SEC) host the Zips (1-2) in Williams-Brice Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) before their open date in Week 5.

The Gamecocks were called for 13 penalties against the Tigers, and Beamer said he wanted some clarification on some of the calls, and the lack of calls against LSU on specific plays.
