Geneva to play familiar foe Perry in key football matchup

Sep. 19—When it comes to playing against programs who have state titles on their resume, the Geneva football team knows a thing or two.

The Eagles have played state championship teams like Kirtland and Chardon in the past. They are also familiar with Perry, which won the Division V state title a year ago.

The Eagles will meet the Pirates starting at 7 p.m. on Friday in a Week 5 matchup at Perry. Geneva enters the game at 4-0, while Perry is 3-1.

Last year, the Pirates came away with a 36-20 decision.

Geneva coach Don Shymske said if his team is to have a chance this week, they can’t make some of the mistakes they made a year ago.

Perhaps, more importantly, the Eagles will need to limit Perry’s ability to strike quickly.

“The biggest thing for us in this game compared to last year is we can’t give up the big plays,” Shymske said. “They hit us on a couple of big plays early on last year, then there were some sort of backyard plays they had right before the half to go up a couple of scores.

“We battled back in the second half, but it was too little, too late. If we can limit those big plays, I think we’ll stand a better chance of competing in the game.”

Limiting big plays will mean keeping the Pirates returning first-team All-Ohio quarterback Walter Moses in check.

Moses, who is headed to the University of Toledo after graduation, threw for more 2,400 yards a season ago with 29 touchdowns.

He was 9-for-14 for 219 yards and a TD in the state championship game — a 21-14 win over Liberty Center.

The Pirates graduated a few of his favorite targets a year ago, but Shymske said he still has plenty of weapons at his disposal.

“They have some different personnel, they did lose some seniors that really stood out and were big pieces of their championship run,” the coach said. “But, they’ve reloaded.”

Perry’s lone loss was 22-21 in three…
