GLASTONBURY – Maloney senior quarterback Ethan Nedinsky had five touchdown passes and passed for 287 yards as the Spartans (1-1) got their first win, 41-27, over Glastonbury in a CCC game.
Maloney had lost in the season opener to New Canaan, ranked No. 1 in the Courant state coaches poll.
“It was good to get that taste out of our mouth from last week,” Maloney coach Kevin Frederick said. “That was not our brand of football.”
Nedinsky’s favorite target was senior Jesus Martell, who caught nine passes for 201 yards and scored four touchdowns.
Senior running back Donald Highsmith, who rushed for 114 yards, had the first touchdown for Maloney on a 2-yard run in the first quarter. Glastonbury (1-1) answered with a 35-yard touchdown run by Dante Casdia. Casdia, a sophomore, had 34 carries for 236 yards and two touchdowns.
Maloney went ahead 14-7 on a Nedinsky to Martell 47-yard TD pass but Nedinsky threw an interception that Camden Combs picked off on the Glastonbury 18-yard line and ran 82 yards for a touchdown and the score was tied at 14 after a quarter. Martell caught two more touchdown passes from Nedinsky in the second quarter to take a 28-14 lead into halftime.
Glastonbury opened the third quarter with a 17-play drive down the field that ate up most of the clock and Casdia ran for the first 15 plays then left the game. Anthony DuBaldo came in and scored from the 3-yard line and Glastonbury trailed 28-21. But Maloney came right back with a Nedinsky to Martell touchdown and led 35-21.
