Can Boilers rebound? Breaking down Purdue football’s road trip to Oregon State

WEST LAFAYETTE − Dillon Thieneman stood before the defense, pointed the finger directly at himself and told his Purdue football teammates he was owning last Saturday and promised to be better.

That’s what All-Americans do when situations like what happened to Purdue against Notre Dame surface.

“Everyone had to accept what happened,” Thieneman said this week, referring to Purdue’s 66-7 loss to Notre Dame. “We couldn’t do anything to change it. It’s in the past now. The leaders, including myself need to step up and carry on what we need to do.”

Other than the humiliation of such a lopsided setback, things returned to norm quickly as to not let the Notre Dame hangover affect preparation for the season’s first road game.

The Boilermakers are in Corvallis, Oregon, attempting to erase last week’s embarrassment against Oregon State.

Scouting Purdue football’s opponent Oregon State

First-year Beavers coach Trent Bray won his first two outings and was in contention for a 3-0 start until the second half last Saturday against Oregon.

The Ducks outscored their state rival 27-0 in the second half, dropping Oregon State to 2-1.

Oregon State’s strength through three games appears to reside in its rushing attack. The Beavers average 5.2 yards per carry and 47 carries per game. Running backs Anthony Hankerson and Jam Griffin combined for 559 rushing yards and eight touchdowns through the first three games.
