Triton honors Coach Jim Doyle with pavilion dedication, ACIT football keeps winning

The Coach Jim Doyle Pavilion was dedicated to the late coach at Triton Regional High School on Thursday.

RUNNEMEDE – Jim Doyle made a lasting impression on many of the athletes he coached and students he taught at Triton Regional High School.

Now, Doyle’s legacy has a permanent spot in the school’s history.

Before Thursday’s football game, Triton honored the late coaching legend by putting his name on its new pavilion on the side of John Oakes Stadium right beside the football field and track where he coached.

The pavilion features a photo of Coach Doyle as well as many of his accomplishments on plaques on the wall underneath the white roof.

“We have the Harry Beaudet gymnasium, the Louis Cappelli Courtyard and now the Coach Jim Doyle Pavilion,” said Ed McLaughlin, who is on the Triton Alumni Committee and was instrumental in the pavilion project. “All three will be remembered for all of time.”

Doyle arrived at Triton in 1967 after coaching stops at Glassboro and Lenape. After Triton Red and Triton Blue, which were separate because of the school’s split sessions at the time, finally combined, Doyle built the Mustangs into a powerhouse. In 12 years, his teams won five Olympic Conference titles and a South Jersey Group 4 title. His 1968 squad went unbeaten and allowed 19 points the entire season.

“Coach Doyle inspired young men to be their better selves,” said McLaughlin, a 1969 graduate of Tri-High who played football for Doyle. “He just had a way about him. He included everyone, made every student feel like they were part of something big. He challenged his athletes to pursue excellence.”
