The Oklahoma Sooners fell to 3-1 on the season, losing their first conference game as a member of the SEC. It was the visiting Tennessee Volunteers who came into Norman on Saturday night and won by a final score of 25-15. In front of a national TV and “College GameDay” audience, OU didn’t exactly make the best first impression.

Putting it bluntly, Oklahoma has a defense that is ready to compete with the best teams in the SEC. After years of Sooner Nation begging for that side of the ball to improve, third-year head coach Brent Venables has gotten that part of the job done, at least four games into this season, as we’re four.

Unfortunately, it’s come at the expense of a good offense.

There simply isn’t anything that Oklahoma does well offensively, and we’re now a third of the way through the season. The offensive line has been well below average all season long, the Sooners have had one healthy starter at wide receiver, the running backs have failed to make an impact, and now there’s a quarterback dilemma in Norman.

Give fourth-year head coach Josh Heupel and the Vols plenty of credit. They are a complete team in all three phases and likely could have won this game by more if they wanted to. There are some things to be encouraged by if you’re Oklahoma, but all of them come on the defensive side of the ball.

Here’s our report card for week four’s loss versus Tennessee.
