What makes Alabama football QB Jalen Milroe so ‘different’ to Georgia coach Kirby Smart

Alabama football quarterback Jalen Milroe has seen Georgia’s defense before.

In Alabama’s SEC Championship win against the Bulldogs in 2023, Milroe completed 13 of 23 pass attempts for 192 yards and two touchdown passes. He added 29 rushing yards on 14 carries including four sacks.

But as Georgia prepares to see Milroe once again, Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart did not sugarcoat what his defense is about to see Saturday night when Milroe takes the field.

“With him, the challenges are immense because he’s an incredible football player,” Smart said. “There is no design to a play that you can draw up and then say, ‘Well, I’m pretty sure this is going to happen on this play with him,’ because you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Smart complimented Milroe’s multiplicity, forcing opposing defenses to balance getting him on the ground as a runner while also being cognizant of the matchups the Alabama offense has on the outside Milroe could exploit.

“He is as different of a football player in college football as I have played against in a long time because people think he’s just a runner, and that’s not the case,” Smart said. “He has a tremendous arm. He can do things with his arm that other people can’t He can reach spots on the field and get it there faster than you can break on it better than most arm talent people.”

Western Kentucky, South Florida and Wisconsin caught glimpses of Milroe’s ability through Alabama’s first three wins of the season. Milroe has completed 35 of 52 pass attempts for 590 yards. He has 14 total touchdowns — eight passing and six rushing — and no interceptions.

Alabama football injury update:

And Smart seems to know what Georgia will be up against Saturday night.

“It’s a tremendous challenge to defend a guy like him,” Smart said.
