College football rankings: Florida State escapes Bottom 25, warm welcome for wallowing Appalachian State

Another week of college football means another installment of CBS Sports’ Bottom 25 rankings, honoring the worst teams in the sport — worst is meant as a complementary term, in this instance. For the first time this year, there are no Power Four teams in the Bottom 25.

Florida State held it down last week, but the Seminoles decided to finally show (some) signs of life in a 14-9 win against Cal. Was it the type of performance that serves as a catalyst for an inspired turnaround after an abysmal start to the year? Probably not, but it was enough to crawl out of the Bottom 25. For now, at least.

There are four newcomers to this week’s rankings, though. None are more surprising than Appalachian State, which has stumbled out of the gates in its sixth year under coach Shawn Clark. The Mountaineers opened Sun Belt Conference play with a whimper in a 48-14 loss to South Alabama.

It snapped Appalachian State’s nine-game win streak in Sun Belt openers. It was also the most points that the Mountaineers have allowed in regulation of a conference game since a 52-45 loss at ULM in 2017.

Bottom 25 rankings

The illustrious Tom Fornelli created the formula that we still use to generate the Bottom 25, but he has since passed on his writing duties. To be clear, the rankings are based on a series of calculations, but the quips are entirely man-made.
