Hugh Freeze delivers hot take following loss to Arkansas

Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze and Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Sam Pittman meet after the game as Auburn Tigers take on Arkansas Razorbacks at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024. Arkansas Razorbacks defeated Auburn Tigers 24-14.

Hugh Freeze has difficulty accepting defeat following Auburn football’s loss to Arkansas last Saturday.

Following the 24-14 loss, he openly threw his quarterbacks and running backs under the bus due to the number of turnovers his team created, which caused backlash from his former players and even Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin. Freeze took a few days to digest the loss and now he sees the Arkansas game from another angle.

During Monday’s Tiger Talk radio show, Freeze shared his thoughts on the loss, including a wild “what could be” scenario that goes against his past stance on the loss.

“I love (Arkansas head coach) Sam Pittman and I hope he wins the rest of his games, but I’m telling you the hard truth is we play [Arkansas] nine more times, we’d beat them nine times. And that’s what’s hard to take,” Freeze said Monday.

Comedian Mike Birbiglia said it best… “What I should have said was nothing.”

It is easy to say that Auburn could have beaten Arkansas without committing five turnovers, by converting over 50% of third down plays, or by getting into the red zone more than once. However, the reality is that Freeze and the Auburn Tigers did not get the job done last Saturday and now sit at 0-1 in SEC play ahead of a tough stretch of games against conference competition. Sometimes it is best to accept defeat and move on to the next game.

Freeze and his staff are back at the drawing board this week to scheme up a better plan for the Tigers as they prepare for the Oklahoma Sooners. May he build the perfect plan and instill confidence in his team ahead of…
