The Pac-12 planned a phased rebuild.
It started when the conference snagged four members — Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State — from the Mountain West.
Those four, plus Oregon State and Washington State were expected to be the core of a Pac-12 rebuild after the rest of the conference bailed for other opportunities.
A lot happened Monday in a wild whirlwind of movement and non-movement. Here’s what we know so far.
Memphis and others from American Athletic Conference spurn Pac-12
Ever since the four MW schools went to the Pac-12, the next big target was expected to be Memphis. Landing Memphis and a couple others (national reports said Tulane and South Florida were the other leading AAC targets) would have made the Pac-12 a coast-to-coast conference.
Monday morning those schools and the AAC publicly pledged a commitment to each other.
That seemingly eliminated AAC teams from the Pac-12 rebuild.

Power struggle out west
With the AAC teams seemingly out, an ongoing power struggle between the remaining Mountain West teams and the Pac-12 intensified.
Air Force re-affirmed a commitment to the MW on Monday, according to national reports. The Mountain West has been attempting to keep the remaining members. Multiple national reports said later Monday that UNLV (another potential Pac-12 target) had also pledged to stay in the MW.
Utah State was then offered and accepted Pac-12 membership, according to Ross Dellenger (Yahoo Sports), Pete Thamel (ESPN) and others.
That move would put both the Pac-12 rebuild and the Mountain West at seven football members. Leagues need eight to meet NCAA requirements.
Thamel and others reported later Monday that Utah State’s move now has UNLV re-considering it’s MW pledge.
