Where Vanderbilt football transfer portal losses have hurt and where Clark Lea found upgrades

The Vanderbilt football roster saw big turnover in the 2023 offseason, with 24 players transferring.

The transfers spanned across all levels, with some landing at other SEC schools while others dropped to the FCS level or to a junior college.

Among the three quarterbacks who transferred, none has played much. Ken Seals has gotten a handful of garbage-time snaps as TCU’s backup, but AJ Swann and Walter Taylor haven’t played at all. The Commodores (2-2, 0-1 SEC) certainly got an upgrade with Diego Pavia, who has 721 passing yards with six touchdowns and 279 rushing yards.

Vanderbilt is off this week after a loss to Missouri and will return to FirstBank Stadium on Oct. 5 to face Alabama.

Along with quarterback, Vanderbilt also upgraded at tight end by bringing in Eli Stowers and Cole Spence getting healthy. Stowers has had a bigger impact than last year’s tight ends, Justin Ball and Logan Kyle, have had at their next stops.

At linebacker, despite losing Ethan Barr, Langston Patterson, Bryan Longwell and TCU transfer Randon Fontenette have done well. Though Nate Clifton was a tough loss for the defensive line, the Commodores found good replacements through the portal with Zaylin Wood and Khordae Sydnor.

There are certainly a few who got away, though. Savion Riley certainly would’ve been nice to have as depth in the secondary, and the game-breaking speed of London Humphreys would fill a big hole in Vanderbilt’s wide receiver corps.
