Wear white, but don’t tell anyone [Penn State notes]

The official 2024 Penn State White Out has been scheduled for Nov. 9 against Washington.

Just don’t tell that to Nittany Lions coach James Franklin, several players and many alumni. They’re encouraging fans to wear white for No. 9 Penn State’s game against No. 19 Illinois Saturday night at 7:30 (TV-NBC) at Beaver Stadium.

Lions senior center Nick Dawkins posted a simple message earlier this week on social media: “Wear White.”

Franklin said immediately after the Lions’ 56-0 rout of Kent State last weekend that he was calling for “White Out energy” at the Illinois game.

“White Out energy is a huge deal,” Dawkins said Wednesday. “Bring that passion that you bring for a White Out. If you check your closet and you have too much blue in the laundry or you have a stain on your favorite gray hoodie, take a peek in the dresser you barely open, find something white and put it on for the game.

“It’s just a recommendation. It’s just a suggestion.”

Penn State is not permitted to have two White Out games in a season because of an agreement with the original Winnipeg Jets of the NHL, who first coined the term in 1987. That was 17 years before Penn State had its first White Out game against Purdue, when only the student section dressed in white.

Since the 2007 game against Notre Dame, Penn State has had one full-stadium White Out every season except 2020 because of the pandemic.

This week’s game will be an unofficial White Out.

“The environment in general is super special,” quarterback Drew Allar said. “Every home game at Beaver Stadium is an opportunity for us to cherish and take in. It’s unmatched in college football. I’m super excited for this weekend because we’re going against a really good team at home.”
