Coaches Poll top 25: Texas rises to No. 1, Alabama jumps Ohio State in college football rankings

USATSI

Week 5 of the 2024 college football season featured the wildest slate yet, filled with major upsets and results that completely shifted the national landscape. As such, there was a lot of movement in this week’s Coaches Poll top 25.

Alabama’s monumental win 41-34 win against Georgia (which maintained a spot in the top five) pushed the Crimson Tide to No. 2, but it also opened the door for Texas, which advanced to 5-0 with a 35-13 win against Mississippi State in its first SEC game, to supplant Georgia as the top team in the nation.

No program saw a more significant change than Ole Miss, which is headed in the wrong direction as SEC play begins. The Rebels plummeted six spots to No. 11 after a home loss against double-digit underdog Kentucky, which itself started SEC play with an 0-2 record after losses to South Carolina and Georgia.

Ole Miss wasn’t the only top-10 team to fall to an unranked opponent. Utah, without quarterback Cameron Rising for a third consecutive week, suffered a rare home loss against Arizona. In light of such highly ranked letdowns, No. 9 Missouri and No. 10 Michigan — which has quietly built back from its loss to Texas with impressive wins against No. 15 USC and Minnesota — both made their return to the top 10.

Here’s a look at the full Week 6 Coaches Poll, with first-place votes in parentheses.
