College football grades: Penn State earns ‘A-‘, Georgia gets a ‘C’ on Week 5 report card

Week 5 of the college football season brought us a new national title favorite, as Alabama surged to the top of the odds sheet with its 41-34 win over Georgia. The dramatic victory validated the Crimson Tide in the post-Nick Saban era and made Bama the nation’s top team from a betting perspective.

That game was just one part of a consequential week in the SEC as Ole Miss went tumbling down the odds sheet with an upset home loss to Kentucky. Though Texas improved to 5-0 with a victory against Mississippi State, the Longhorns exited Week 5 registering at No. 3 on the odds sheet, despite being ranked No. 1 in the AP poll for Week 5.

With the dust settled, the SEC still has three of the top-four favorites to win the national championship entering Week 6 action, as Georgia didn’t fall too far. But the Big Ten is firmly in the mix near the top of list as well. Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State each notched double-digit victories to remain unbeaten and in the national-title discussion.

The ACC also has two teams represented in the top-10 of the national title odds breakdown. Miami’s performance against Virginia Tech on Friday night was no masterpiece. But the dramatic victory kept the Hurricanes unbeaten. Clemson also kept itself in the hunt by taking care of business against Stanford on Saturday night.

With that, here are the grades from Week 4 for each team with national title odds of +4000 or better.
