New Mexico State offensive coordinator Tyler Wright under investigation for derogatory social media posts

USATSI

New Mexico State offensive coordinator Tyler Wright is under investigation by the university for derogatory tweets posted under his X (formerly Twitter) account. Between 2011 and 2014, Wright, then a wide receiver at Tarleton State, posted more than 150 tweets containing derogatory references or language towards women, LGBTQ+ individuals, Blacks and Hispanics, among others — some of which contain common racial slurs — according to the Las Cruces Sun-News.

Wright was not present for the Aggies’ Week 5 game against New Mexico and will not be around the team as the university investigates the matter.

Similar activity from Wright halted in 2015, per the Sun-News, when he was hired as the wide receivers coach at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas.

“We talked to the boys very briefly this morning about it,” New Mexico State coach Tony Sanchez said after the 50-40 loss to New Mexico. “We talked about, you know, nothing changes. We didn’t find out until really late last night (Friday). Had no opportunity to know exactly what was going on. It’s kind of funny how it got dropped at the last second, late at night — in the dead of the night. But no, we haven’t had a chance to review it and we’ll comment on it later.”

Wright was hired by former NMSU coach Jerry Kill in December 2021 as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. He was elevated to offensive coordinator and moved to quarterbacks coach in the offseason ahead of Sanchez’s first year leading the program.
