There will be at least nine people who disagree with this, but here goes:
Barring total catastrophe, Florida football coach Billy Napier should keep his job for the rest of the season.
Chances are more than nine people just spit out their coffee. But there are only nine donors listed on the GoFundMe page that’s raising money to “send Billy Napier into early retirement.”
It’s raised $620 so far, though nothing in the past three weeks. GoFundMe suspended donations due to unspecified issues.
If only it were that easy to suspend the frustration Florida football fans feel toward Napier.
The best that can be said is it hasn’t gotten worse in the past week or so, primarily because the Gators haven’t played. They’ll be back at it Saturday against UCF, and the buzzards will again be circling.
Their eagerness is understandable. I was one of the many who said Napier should have been fired after the Texas A&M game.
Evaluation of Florida’s football coach should be on a sliding scale
The 33-20 loss confirmed that UF’s opening 41-17 pratfall against Miami wasn’t a fluke. Napier’s rebuilding project had caved in, so Florida should follow the decree of legendary AD Jeremy Foley:
“What should be done eventually must be done immediately.”
Upon further review, that’s not the best move with Napier — unless things get really humiliating.
That’s a sliding scale. A 13-point loss to UCF would be humiliating. A 13-point loss at Texas would not be.
If the current 2-2 record turns into 2-7, it would be too much for Gator Nation to bear. If Florida wins a couple between now and mid-November, let Napier coach out the string.
(In the interest of not being fitted for a straitjacket, I won’t mention that UF could always rise from the dead and go 10-2).
