Florida football WR Eugene Wilson III making progress, could return for UCF game

Florida football sophomore wide receiver Eugene Wilson III is making progress in his return from a knee injury but remains questionable for Saturday’s game against UCF at The Swamp (7:45 p.m., SEC Network)

The 5-foot-10, 181-pound Wilson, the Florida Gators leading returning receiver going into the 2024 season, has missed UF’s last two games. He underwent surgery the week before UF’s 45-28 win at Mississippi State on Sept. 21.

“He’s done some things in practice,” Florida football coach Billy Napier said. “He took reps today.”

Despite missing two games, Wilson still ranks second in UF in receiving yardage with 13 catches for 191 yards and 1 TD.

The return of Wilson would bolster a receiving corps that stepped up in his absence during UF’s road win over the Bulldogs. Florida quarterbacks Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway spread the ball out to 10 different receivers and tight ends during the win, with wide receiver Marcus Burke, tight end Hayden Hansen and tight end Arlis Boardingham making TD catches.

“Marcus Burke. Burke’s had a good couple of weeks,” Napier said. “I think he’s probably the best he’s been in his career, not only on the field, but off the field.”

Napier would not comment on the status of safety Asa Turner, who has missed most of the season after going down with an injury in UF’s season opener against Miami. Florida is not mandated to put out an availability report this week because it’s not an SEC game.
