Hamilton football forfeits TSSAA game vs. Melrose because of player shortage

Hamilton football has forfeited its Friday game against Melrose at Crump Stadium because of a player shortage, both Hamilton coach Antwone Moore and Melrose coach Jarrett Morrow confirmed to The Commercial Appeal Thursday.

Friday’s forfeiture comes in the wake of Hamilton firing 10 of its football coaches following an on-field altercation between the former coaching staff and the school’s athletic director during the team’s Sept. 13 game against Sheffield.

Since the staff turnover, player numbers on the team have been low. Just 17 players were present, of the original 45-man roster, for the team’s 41-0 loss to Bolton last Friday.

Coach Moore, who was hired to replace Jerel Blanchard, said that the program still plans to finish the season despite the depleted roster.

Moore previously led the football program prior to his resignation in 2022. He was still present at Hamilton as the school’s track and field coach prior to the firings.

Hamilton’s record falls to 2-5 (1-3 in Region 8-3A) after losing its previous three games that began with the 16-6 loss to Sheffield, a game that was cut short at halftime.
