Future Pac-12 partners Oregon State and Colorado State share plenty of similarities

A CSU record crowd of more than 40,000 saw the Colorado State football team face Colorado early in the 2024 season.

Two similar universities that are now partners in college athletics.

That’s the view of Oregon State and Colorado State as the football teams prepare to meet Saturday in Corvallis.

Both began as land-grant institutions and have a great agricultural history. Oregon State was once known as Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) and CSU was once Colorado Agricultural College (CAC).

They’ll soon be in the same conference, with Colorado State joining the Pac-12 in 2026.

Here’s a “tale of the tape” comparing the two universities. They share a striking resemblance to each other.

Enrollment

Oregon State announced a total of 36,636 for 2023 fall enrollment while CSU’s official total last year was 33,648. Oregon State was founded in 1868 and CSU in 1870.

University rating

The latest U.S. News and World Report University rankings have Colorado State and Oregon State in similar territory as top-150 universities. CSU comes in at No. 148 and Oregon State at No. 144.

Football stadiums

Oregon State’s Reser Stadium completed a renovation to the west side in 2023. It was originally built in 1953 and has a capacity of 35,548. The largest crowd in Reser Stadium history was 47,249 for a game against Oregon in 2012.

CSU’s Canvas Stadium opened in 2017 and has a seated capacity of 36,500, with the ability to go to 41,000 via standing room only. CSU’s record crowd was 40,009 for a game earlier this season against Colorado. CSU’s first game at its new stadium in 2017 was against Oregon State (a 58-27 win for the Rams).
