Northern Arizona Football: Lumberjacks crack Top 25, Idaho up next

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (3-2, 1-0) will travel to Moscow, Idaho, Saturday to take on their second Big Sky opponent of the season, the Idaho Vandals (3-2, 0-1).

Kickoff is at 2 p.m. MST.

NAU will try to carry the momentum from their big win against Sacramento State against another ranked conference foe, Idaho, which earlier this season was in the Top 5 of the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll.

Last week

NAU cracked the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, which ranks D-I subdivision teams, after their 34-16 home win against Sacramento State last Saturday. In its first conference matchup of the year, the Lumberjacks took down the then-ranked No. 10 team in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll. The Hornets have since dropped to No. 20. NAU is among others receiving votes in that poll with 25.

The victory is NAU’s first win against a ranked opponent since last Oct. 28 and the highest-ranked win for the Lumberjacks since 2018.

The NAU defense stepped up big during the win. Ammon Allen, who transferred from Arizona and played high school football at Gilbert Highland, recovered a fumble forced by Alex McLaughlin and returned it eight yards for a score. Then two plays later, Zach Lewis returned an interception. The Lumberjacks forced four turnovers in the game and kept the Hornets out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.

Ty Pennington completed 22 of his 27 passing attempts for 275 yards and two touchdowns; and for the fifth-straight game, did not throw an interception.
