Oklahoma high school football: C.J. Turnbull, Millwood overpower Jones in Week 5

Millwood has a legacy of superb football players.

Joe Carter and Joey Mickey. Mandrell Dean and Greg Gude. The Woods brothers,

C.J. Turnbull would someday like to join that list of Falcon greats.

If Friday night is any indication, Turnbull is on his way. The junior quarterback passed for 182 yards and ran for 137 to lead No. 2-ranked Millwood to a 46-13 high school football rout of No. 4 Jones before a crowd of about 800 at L.W. Good Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Millwood’s Schuylar Turnbull (3) celebrates a touchdown with Xzavier Thompson during the high school football Soul Bowl game between Douglass and Millwood at Douglass High School in Oklahoma City, Saturday, Sept., 14, 2024.

Turnbull completed 13 of 18 passes with no interceptions. He threw three touchdown passes, including 7- and 39-yarders to Arizona State commit Xzavier Thompson in the second half to help Millwood improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in district play.

“Tonight, we were just really locked in,” said Turnbull, who also threw a 23-yard TD pass to Gabriel Bivens that helped give the Falcons a 24-0 lead in the first quarter. “We thought it would be a harder game, and they (Jones) were still locked in. So, at halftime, I told our guys that we still had to keep our foot on their necks, because they could come back us on as fast as we put it on them.”

Turnbull broke off several big runs to put Millwood in scoring position. He had 27-, 54- and 52-yard runs, scrambling away from Jones defenders along the way.

“He’s a special kid,” Millwood coach Darwin Franklin said of the three-year starter. “He’s helped us get to the state championship game twice. I think he’s understanding what he needs to do He’s doing a great job.”
