Readers blame offense, defense, orange pants for Tennessee football loss to Arkansas | Adams

My literary contributors responded quickly to Tennessee’s 19-14 loss to Arkansas on Saturday at Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville. They weren’t complimentary.

Dan writes: Why do we consistently make stupid mistakes that draw a penalty flag? Roughing the punter was a bone head move. Should have never been close to the punter. They were punting deep in their territory.

Mr. Josh needs to spend some NIL money and hire a penalty coach. For he is doing a terrible job. Most penalized team in SEC history entire time at Tennessee. Makes me wonder does anyone say anything or is there any consequences to their dumb mistakes.

My response: Tennessee doesn’t have the stupid-plays market cornered. Maybe the NCAA is to blame.

If it hadn’t limited the number of hours teams could practice, players would be less likely to make silly — or as you said, “stupid” — mistakes. And because players are being paid now, shouldn’t they be working more hours, not fewer?

Glenn writes: Poor offensive play execution throughout the game cost the Vols. The offensive line was beaten consistently throughout the first half and Nico played like the freshman he is and needing more game experience.

If the Vols are to make the playoffs, their offensive play calling and execution will have to improve. Arkansas should give the game ball to Bobby Petrino.

My response: No question, Petrino was the best play-caller Saturday night. Critics think he has lost his edge, but you couldn’t tell it against the Vols.

UT coach Josh Heupel’s game plan confused everybody except the Arkansas defense.

Susie writes: Out coached, out prepared and out played. Complete debacle.

Nico played like a true freshman, and penalties did not help. He was confused all night and let’s hope this is a learning experience for him. I think Heupel can use this as big-time…
