Injured USF quarterback Byrum Brown could play against Memphis

Four days before USF and Memphis are slated to square off at Raymond James Stadium, the status of the Bulls’ best offensive weapon — like the game itself — remains day to day.

Bulls quarterback Byrum Brown, who exited his team’s Sept. 28 loss at Tulane with a left-leg injury, could return for the conference showdown with the Tigers, coach Alex Golesh said Tuesday.

“He is working to get back, was at practice (Tuesday),” Golesh told local reporters via Zoom on Tuesday, shortly before the team evacuated for Orlando with Hurricane Milton approaching. “I’d say day to day, and we’ll see where he’s at at the end of the week.”

The contest, originally set for Friday night, was moved to Saturday at 3:30 p.m. due to the projected impacts of Milton, which was set to make landfall somewhere on Florida’s west coast Wednesday night. School and American Athletic Conference officials will revisit the status of the game at some point Thursday, once the initial impact of Milton has been assessed.

“I think the extra day helps us, but (Brown) has been awesome,” Golesh said. “He’s such a positive dude in general, but we’ll go day to day and see what he looks like closer to Friday.”

Golesh added that several other players injured during — or before — the Tulane contest are “full-go” for Memphis, or whichever game the Bulls play next. Among them: left tackle R.J. Perry, cornerback DeShawn Rucker, safety Tawfiq Byard, edge rusher Jason Vaughn and linebacker Jhalyn Shuler.

“I think we’re actually kind of in some ways getting healthier,” Golesh said. “The bye week was good for us.”
