Top 5 Penn State football survives at USC: Did it rise again in the polls?

Penn State football proved it is a top-five team — at least for a couple of more weeks — with a thrilling overtime victory on the road.

The Nittany Lions (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) are on the move again, rising two more spots to No. 3 in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll released Sunday. The jump comes after Saturday’s rally to defeat the USC Trojans, 33-30, in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Penn State relied on a record-breaking performance from tight end Tyler Warren (17 catches, 241 yards), late-game heroics from quarterback Drew Allar (391 passing yards, two touchdowns) and a perfect day from walk-on kicker Ryan Barker, who made the winning field goal in overtime.

It was PSU’s first win on a walk-off field goal since coach James Franklin’s 2014 debut in Ireland. It also was the Lions’ first victory over USC in 28 years.

Penn State will be idle next weekend before traveling to Wisconsin on Oct. 26.

The Lions moved up in the coaches’ poll — jumping along the way — thanks, in part, to Oregon’s 32-31 primetime home victory over Ohio State. The Ducks moved to No. 2 while the Buckeyes fell to No. 5, just behind Penn State.

Texas remains the nation’s top team.

Georgia stayed at No. 4 after its lackluster victory over 1-5 Mississippi State. Miami (No. 6) and Alabama (No. 7) hold their positions from last week, with LSU, Clemson and Tennessee rounding out the top 10.

The Lions also are No. 3 in the weekly Associated Press poll.
