Gulf Coast hires former Lehigh defensive coordinator Manny Evans as head football coach

Manny Evans has often had to wait his turn.

Sometimes it was by choice. Sometimes it was out of his control. But earlier this month, Evans saw an opportunity he didn’t want to pass up.

Evans, 52, was announced as Gulf Coast’s head football coach, becoming the seventh in program history. He’s set to take over for Todd Nichols, who led the program to a 20-19 record over four seasons while winning the program’s second district title and setting a program record for most wins in a season.

Gulf Coast named Manny Evans as the program’s head football coach earlier this month. Evans previously served as an assistant at Lehigh under James Chaney before joining the Sharks in the fall as a defensive assistant.

“Being the guy, I’m just thankful and I’m blessed that the administration trusted me to be the person to lead these young men,” Evans said. “At the end of the day, I’m going to give it everything I’ve got. I know that sounds cliché, but they’re going to get 1,000 percent of me, my tone, and my energy to them. We’re gonna go see what we can accomplish, which I think is going to be some really great things. It’s going to be a new day and a new brand of Gulf Coast High School football.”

Gulf Coast activities coordinator Alan Scott was a part of a nationwide search that involved 22 candidates and mentioned Evans’ ability to connect with players as a big reason for his hiring. Scott welcomed feedback and input from rising senior leaders on the team, something that didn’t happen when the school was seeking a football coach following Tom Scalise’s resignation in 2020.
