What Dabo Swinney said about Clemson football’s Caden Story marijuana possession charge

CHARLOTTE — Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney commented on defensive tackle Caden Story’s marijuana possession charge on Thursday at ACC Kickoff.

Swinney said the team will handle the redshirt sophomore’s situation internally but added Story is a “great kid.”

“The way it was written is like he was handcuffed and taken to jail. That’s not accurate,” Swinney said. “He was issued a ticket, a citation. So, he’ll be held accountable for that, and he’ll handle that and the process, gotta go to court for that like the ticket says.”

According to Pickens County court records, Story was charged with possessing 28 grams (one ounce) or less on Sunday. It is his first offense, and the charge is classified as a misdemeanor. His case, which was filed Tuesday, is listed as criminal, and he has to pay $615 in fines/costs. His court date is listed on Sept. 24.

If Story is convicted, he “must be imprisoned not more than 30 days or fined not less than $100 nor more than $200,” per South Carolina Code of Laws section 44-53-370(d)(4).

According to the Clemson athlete handbook, a player who is arrested and/or charged with a drug-related crime will be subject to drug-testing under the Clemson University Athletic Department Use/Misuse Program. For all misdemeanor charges/convictions, the coach will recommend, within seven days, a course of action, and upon approval by the designated CUAD administrator, give out sanctions.

Story is the third Clemson football player to receive criminal changes this year, joining defensive tackle DeMonte Capehart and wide receiver Noble Johnson.
