ESPN: Sherrone Moore could face NCAA penalties after deleting texts with Connor Stalions

Michigan football hasn’t officially received a notice of allegations (NOA) from the NCAA, but a draft shows that the governing body has discovered that new head coach Sherrone Moore deleted a thread of text messages between himself and former staffer Connor Stalions.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Dan Murphy report that Moore could potentially receive a show cause for his action, which took place the same day that Stalions was outed as a suspect of alleged illegal sign stealing in October 2023.

Additionally, several former staff members, including Jim Harbaugh, are subject to potential Level I penalties, per the NCAA NOA draft. The report indicates that the staffers under Harbaugh are being charged with impermissible benefits in terms of recruiting.

Former Michigan staff members Jim Harbaugh, Chris Partridge, Denard Robinson and Stalions are also accused of committing Level 1 violations, the most serious category in the NCAA’s enforcement process. The school also faces a Level 1 violation charge, according to the draft, due to its “pattern of noncompliance within the football program” and institutional efforts to hinder or thwart the NCAA’s investigation. Former coaches Jesse Minter and Steve Clinkscale are also accused of recruiting violations unrelated to Stalions in the draft.

The draft also implicates Stalions as the person of interest on the sidelines at the Central Michigan at Michigan State game.
