ESPN omits Notre Dame from its top-25 most important players in College Football Playoff race

As the 2024 Notre Dame football season rapidly approaches, the goals are fairly obvious, make the expanded College Football Playoff field.

ESPN ranked 25 players with the most importance (subscription required) in the CFP race, and not one member of the Irish was included in the group. There is a silver-lining however, as [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] was one of two players named as other to watch in the new starting quarterback for potential contenders group.

There were only three players named, so its not like ESPN forgot about him, its just the Leonard was behind a trio Big Ten quarterbacks (Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, Michigan’s Alex Ojri and Ohio State’s Will Howard) in impacting how the CFP field will look like.

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard (13) passes to Jack Larsen (85) as quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli looks on at Notre Dame spring football practice Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the Irish Athletics Center in South Bend.

In many preseason lists like this one, beauty is in the eye of the writer, as Bill Connelly complied the players. Clearly things can change during the season, as injuries, ineffectiveness and back luck could lead to Leonard jumping right into the mix.

If Notre Dame completes its goal, he’ll surely be look back on as one of the most important quarterbacks in college football.
