ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum thinks that the expanded College Football Playoff benefits Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart. Smart and Georgia narrowly missed the 2023 playoff after falling to Alabama in the 2023 SEC championship game in the Bulldogs’ lone defeat last season.
“The playoff benefits Kirby Smart,” said Finebaum. “He has a game to burn! He has two games to burn!”
There’s no doubt that with an expanded playoff, Georgia is expected to make the postseason. The Bulldogs have lost just two games over the past three seasons. However, Georgia missed the playoff in 2023. The Dawgs have more margin for error in 2024, which Georgia needs because they play at Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas this fall.
Kirby Smart acknowledges that Georgia needs to build itself the right way for the expanded playoff, which means the Bulldogs could play in up to 17 games this year.
“It’s really important that we establish depth, that we’re looking at a potentially longer season,” said Kirby Smart.
Paul Finebaum has no concerns about Georgia managing the new landscape of college football. “It does not matter (on Georgia facing more games in the playoff). They’ll figure out a way to manage,” said Finebaum.
Georgia has sky-high expectations in 2024. The Dawgs are predicted to win the SEC despite facing a tough schedule. Georgia is the preseason No. 1 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Former Alabama Crimson Tide head Nick Saban even predicts that Georgia will face the Texas Longhorns in the SEC title game.
