What Tennessee football’s hot recruiting means for Vols’ future quarterback depth chart

Tennessee’s Josh Heupel and his staff are proving they’re ace quarterback recruiters.

The talent is stacked up for years to come.

Five-star redshirt freshman Nico Iamaleava takes the reins this season, while four-star rookie Jake Merklinger will be among the backups. Four-star George MacIntyre is committed to Tennessee’s 2025 class, and five-star Faizon Brandon, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2026 class, also committed to the Vols.

Talk about coming up aces.

Brandon’s skillset compares favorably to Hendon Hooker, a fellow North Carolina native.

Heupel’s 2025 class is shaping up as his best ever. Headlined by MacIntyre, the class is ranked No. 7 nationally in the 247Sports Composite. MacIntyre is set to sign in December.

SPARKS: Eventually, one of these quarterbacks will discern that he’s the odd-man out. After Iamaleava arrived, former Vols quarterback Tayven Jackson read the tea leaves and transferred to Indiana. That very well could happen with one of these quarterbacks at some point.

There’s only one starting quarterback, and highly rated guys don’t want to be backups forever. Tennessee is positioned to have a minimum of two really talented quarterbacks on the depth chart for years to come. That’s about as good as you can do it.
