Stonehill College football hungry for 2024 NEC title

There was no shortage of energy radiating from Stonehill College’s football practice Thursday morning, even down to the final reps of the day.

On the final play of 11 on 11 scrimmages, the defense made a stop, sending its players into a frenzy as they yelled and rushed to the end zone to celebrate.

Earlier, the offense had its turn to celebrate, scoring a rushing touchdown from within the 5-yard line, and the players made sure to let the defense hear it following the score.

It was a competitive atmosphere that was felt by anyone standing within the radius of W.B Mason Field. And that’s because the players can taste the start of the regular season just three weeks away.

“Practice is definitely energetic. We got offense and defense going back at each other,” Brockton native and Stonehill junior safety Guershan Suffrant said. “We’re brothers, but at the end of the day when we get on the field, we’re here to compete.”

Stonehill improved drastically in 2023, finishing in a four-way tie for second in the NEC, highlighted by beating reigning NEC champion Duquesne. Stonehill was the only team to beat Duquesne in conference play last season.

“We don’t look at the past anymore, we just keep moving forward,” Suffrant said. “One foot in front of the other until we’re champs.”
