Aug. 29, 2014: Conemaugh Township junior back Austin Myers spoiled the season-opening celebration at Windber Stadium by rushing for 247 yards and all three of his team’s touchdowns in a 21-14 victory over the Ramblers. Windber celebrated 100 years of football in a pregame ceremony that brought back former players, including 95-year-old Bill Beckley, a member of the 1933 Ramblers state championship team.

20 Years Ago

Sept. 3, 2004: Greater Johnstown running back LaRod Stephens-Howling had five touchdowns in a 61-28 Week 1 victory at Cambria Heights. The future University of Pittsburgh and NFL player gained 166 yards on six carries, scoring on runs of 60, 29, 2 and 48 yards, while hauling in a 47-yard TD pass from Devin Carosi. Current Trojans coach Antwuan Reed returned a punt 48 yards for another score.

30 Years Ago

Sept. 2, 1994: Forest Hills quarterback Justin Myers completed 63% of his passes in a 34-12 victory over host Somerset in the season opener. Myers, the current Forest Hills coach, threw TD passes of 35 yards to Brian Endler and 10 yards to Lance McGough. Mike Magro had a 69-yard interception return for a score and touchdowns runs of 1 and 9 yards for the Rangers.

40 Years Ago

Sept. 1, 1984: Greater Johnstown Vo-Tech sophomore running back Brian Rozich broke a 6-all tie with a 21-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter as the Spartans ended what was the region’s then-current longest winless streak at 19 games. Vo-Tech edged Homer-Center 14-6 in the season opener…
