FOOTBALL: Logansport strikes back to take Baldini Trophy

PERU — Some games mean more to certain players and that was the case for Logansport’s Elliot Baldini against Peru on Friday night.

The sophomore Baldini was able to hoist the trophy with his grandfather’s namesake on it as the Berries defeated Peru 49-7 in one of the state’s longest continuous rivalry games.

Don Baldini grew up in Peru and graduated from Logansport High School in 1956. He later became the winningest coach in Logansport history, going 92-79 in 17 seasons from 1977-1993. He won an NCC title in 1977 and sectional titles in 1986 and 1988. He is one of only five LHS football coaches with at least 10 wins to have a winning career mark. The Baldini Trophy was awarded to the winner of the Logansport-Peru game beginning in 2016 when he was 77. He died in 2021 at the age of 82.

Elliot Baldini rushed for 75 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries in the victory. He had TD runs of 4 and 7 yards in the first quarter and another TD run of 4 yards with 10:30 left in the game to start a running clock.

“It feels great to get it back,” Baldini said. “We lost it last year but it’s pretty good to get it back.”

“He means a lot coaching here and it just feels great to play at the same place that he coached and had so much success,” Baldini said.

What’s new this year to Logansport football is usually the Berries play a schedule consisting of mostly larger schools.
