Desmond Howard breaks down Michigan football vs. Texas game expectations

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It couldn’t be a bigger game in Week 2 as defending national champion Michigan football welcomes fellow 2023 College Football Playoff participant Texas to The Big House for a top 10 matchup in nonconference.

It’s only the second-ever meeting between the two storied programs and it’s the only regular-season matchup that will have happened up to this point between the Wolverines and Longhorns. The game will be nationally broadcast on Fox with Big Noon Kickoff in tow, but it’s such a big matchup that ESPN also brought its flagship college football pregame show, ‘College GameDay’ to Ann Arbor to cover the game.

On Friday, famed Michigan football alum and former Heisman winner Desmond Howard met up with us and a few other reporters to discuss the big matchup with Texas. Here is everything Howard said.

How did Ann Arbor and Michigan shape him personally?

There’s a lot to unpack there. I had tremendous coaches. I had a great mentor. So I had some really good people around me who helped shape me into the man I became, then but ultimately am right now. So I had some great coaches and wonderful mentors. Well, a wonderful mentor, and my man, Greg Harden.

What did he glean from Michigan in Week 1 and did they maybe hold anything back?

I don’t know this from speaking to any coaches, but if I was a coach, and I knew I had the Longhorns coming in here the next week, I’m just not going to show a lot. And then at the same time, you have a new offensive line, you’re trying to break in. So you want to see what they have. A lot of coaches around the country, they’re trying to figure out their personnel. There were a lot of games — I mean, you look at the Clemson game versus Georgia, that game was 6-0 halftime. Second half, they ran away with it. The Ohio State game…
