Coyotes football game at Portland State called off due to illness

Sep. 14—HILLSBORO, Ore. — The University of South Dakota football game with Portland State on Saturday has been canceled due to illness within the Portland State football program.

According to USD, a case of pertussis (whooping cough) got into the Viking team two days ago. Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that affects the lungs, and many members of the Viking football program have been exposed to the disease.

The game was scheduled for 3 p.m. Central on Saturday afternoon.

The two programs and their team doctors have been in discussions regarding the situation, USD said. It was determined by Portland State that the game would not be played in the interest of the health of the student-athletes.

Portland State said in a statement that no members of its team were seriously ill.

USD (1-1) will play Drake at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
