UWF football returns home for conference matchup against Mississippi College on Saturday

Three weeks have provided three vastly different outcomes for the University of West Florida football team.

Week 1 allowed the Argos to show what they’re generally capable of on offense with a new quarterback and a few new receivers in a dominant win over McKendree University.

Week 3, after a 16-day break between games, showed UWF’s ability to fight back through a game, and how little things add up in an overtime loss to West Alabama.

Week 4 potentially exposed a good number of early-season weaknesses against a historically great Grand Valley State program in a deflating loss.

“We’ve played a tough schedule so far. I’d be shocked if there are many teams that’ll have a higher strength of schedule than us at this point,” UWF head coach Kaleb Nobles said. “That’s part of playing good football. It’s tougher to schedule teams. We know that will prepare us if we use it the right way. … It all sounds good on paper, but you have to apply it and use the lessons you learned the right way. Otherwise, it’s going to be failures.”

And now, UWF returns to PenAir Field on Saturday to resume its Gulf South Conference schedule when the Argos host Mississippi College. Six of the Argos’ seven last games are GSC contests, with the lone exception being at Shorter on Oct. 19, though the Hawks used to be league foes and are now with Conference Carolinas.

Notably, a few more GSC teams will leave the conference and join Conference Carolinas in 2025, including Shorter, Erskine and North Greenville. But that’s another story for another time.

After falling to Grand Valley State last Saturday, the Argos have dropped back-to-back contests for the first time since 2018. It’s the first time that UWF has had a losing record at any point in the year since its inaugural season in 2016.
