DJ Uiagalelei injury: College career may be over after Florida State QB undergoes hand surgery

DJ Uiagalelei may have played his last college snap.

The Florida State QB underwent surgery this week to repair a throwing hand injury and is expected to miss at least several weeks and potentially the rest of the season, sources tell 247Sports and CBS Sports. Uiagalelei would have an uphill battle to a medical hardship waiver — he has already participated in more than 30% of FSU’s 12-game regular season — if he even chose to go that route, which is unlikely. 

Uiagalelei suffered the injury during the Seminoles’ loss to SMU last week. It contributed to FSU shifting to Brock Glenn as its starting QB heading into today’s matchup against Clemson.

Uiagalelei, who transferred to Florida State this past offseason after stops at Clemson and Oregon State, started each of the Seminoles’ first five games at QB. Uiagalele had four touchdown passes and six interceptions through these first five games at FSU. He had 223 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions against SMU prior to being replaced by Glenn. 

A career revival at Oregon State that saw Uiagalelei account for 27 touchdowns in 2023 did not translate to Tallahassee, where Florida State began the year as a top-10 preseason team. Uiagalelei was ranked as the No. 2 recruit coming out of the 2020 class, behind Bryce Young. He spent his first three seasons at Clemson, including the 2021 and 2022 seasons as a starter.
