Penn State football made yet another big move up in the Top 10 − despite its struggling victory over the overmatched UCLA Bruins.
The Nittany Lions (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) rose two more spots to No. 5 in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll released Sunday. The move comes after grinding out a 27-11 win over one of the worst statistical teams in the nation Saturday in Beaver Stadium. The Bruins fell to 1-4 overall.
Their poll jump was predicated by two huge upsets − No. 1 Alabama’s 40-35 loss to unranked Vanderbilt and No. 4 Tennessee’s 19-14 loss to unranked Arkansas. Last week, the Lions moved up a spot after Mississippi’s upset defeat to Kentucky.
Other Big Ten Top 20 winners this weekend were new No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Oregon and No. 20 Indiana, which is 6-0 for the first time since 1967.

The defending national champion Michigan Wolverines, now No. 21, are out of the College Football Playoff picture for the time being after their second early defeat, this one to unranked Washington.
Penn State now prepares for its toughest test yet of the 2024 season − a cross-country road trip to meet the talented but falling USC Trojans and star quarterback Miller Moss on Saturday in Los Angeles. The Trojans dropped out of the Top 25 after their surprising defeat at Minnesota.
Penn State finally begins the most challenging portion of their schedule: after USC and a bye week, it will travel to Wisconsin before welcoming the undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes to Beaver Stadium. The run ends Nov. 9 with Washington, the national championship runner-up, in a White Out game.
