Fred Perry ejected for targeting in Jax State vs New Mexico State football game

JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville State football’s Fred Perry was ejected in the first half of the Gamecocks’ matchup with New Mexico State after a targeting penalty.

The penalty occurred with about seven minutes to go in the second quarter as Perry hit Aggie quarterback Santino Marucci. Perry launched himself at Marucci, who left the game after. Parker Awad came into the game at quarterback for the Aggies.

The penalty brought back a fumble that would’ve given the Gamecocks the ball at the 45-yard line. The Aggies went on the score a field goal, bringing the score to 16-6 in favor of Jax State.

What is targeting in college football?

There are two indicators of targeting in NCAA college football. Either a player leads with the crown of his helmet or makes forcible contact with the head or neck area of a defenseless player.

Targeting is a 15-yard penalty and the guilty player is ejected from the game. Perry will not have to sit out another game since the incident happened in the first half.
