FOOTBALL: Taylor’s defense comes up big in victory over TC

Taylor’s football team used one big offensive play and two defensive stands inside its 10-yard line to beat Tri-Central 7-6 in a Hoosier Heartland Conference game on Friday night at Taylor Memorial Field. It was also Taylor’s homecoming.

“It’s great for our kids, it’s great for the school,” Taylor coach Rob Patchett said. “I’m not sure we played very well. I think we can play much better than what we played, on both sides of the ball, but we’ll take victories anyway we can get them.”

The Titans improved to 4-4 (2-4 in the HHC), reaching the four-win mark for the first time since the 2015 season.

“I don’t think we’ve come close to reaching our potential,” Patchett said, “but I don’t want to take anything away from this win. A win is a win.”

Taylor’s big offensive play came early in the second quarter. Quarterback Jalyn Wooten connected with receiver Keyshawn Galloway over the middle and Galloway sped away from TC’s defense for a 61-yard touchdown. Nathan Spray kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

The Titans’ defensive stands came in the second half. First, the Trojans opened the half with a 15-play drive that lasted 8:30. The Trojans looked in good shape with first and goal from Taylor’s 6-yard line, but the Titans slammed the door shut and the Trojans turned it over on downs.

TC (1-7, 0-6 HHC) countered with a defensive stand of its own early in the fourth quarter. After Taylor recovered a TC fumble at the TC 7-yard line, the Trojans forced Taylor’s Wooten into four incompletions.

Patchett said the Titans had to go without a running back for most of the second quarter and all of the second half after Dylan Underwood left with an injury. He was filling in for Wooten, who is playing QB with normal QB Javionne Harris limited because of a hand injury.
